The trick-or-treaters went home. Was your puppy or dog still watching the door?

Hello Reader,

How did Halloween go at your house?

Did your puppy or dog go back to what they were doing after each knock? Or were they still watching the door long after everyone went home?

That is one of the things I pay attention to. How long does it take them to settle once things quiet down? It helps me figure out what might make the next visit easier.

If the clocks changed where you live, your usual walk might be darker now, or your puppy or dog might be looking for dinner a little earlier than you are.

November can bring its own changes, too. A walk gets pushed back. A package arrives while you’re making dinner. Someone comes over when your puppy or dog is used to having a quiet evening. If walks or visitors are already hard, you might feel it a little more this month.

Here’s one thing you can try. If someone’s coming over, ask them to text when they get there. That gives you a minute to help your puppy or dog settle in a spot they already like, away from the door, before you let your guest in.

See if that makes the first few minutes easier for both of you.

On Friday, I will share how I can help you make a plan if having people over is already something you’re worried about this holiday season.

Talk soon,

Kristine
